LIVERPOOL SCRATCH CHOIR

An exciting one-off project

Do you sing in a choir? Would you like to be part of a fun, surprising event, celebrating the great city of Liverpool? This is your chance!

On Saturday 21st July, there will be a “flash mob” choral performance somewhere in Liverpool (we’re not saying where publicly!). The music for this flash mob includes songs from iconic Liverpudlian bands and singers, from Cilla Black to The Boo Radleys.

Following this, there will be a concert at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Both events will be raising money for the Alder Hey Children’s Charity and Sunflowers (supporting cancer patients, survivors and carers in Merseyside).

PLEASE NOTE: Both events are now fully booked.

FLASH MOB

In order to keep the flash mob element of this event a surprise to the general public, we’re not advertising the location or exact time of it (it will be during the daytime).

The team behind this event have produced several major flash mobs of this type before, all with the full involvement and permission of the sites involved. These have included a 200+ voice rendition of Motown classics in the International Arrivals hall at St Pancras station, and a huge Queen medley outside Buckingham Palace.

CONCERT

The afternoon concert will take place in the magnificent nave of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. A touring choir will join singers from across Liverpool for this event. It will include a programme of twelve songs, all themed around UK cities and travel. The full song list is at the bottom of this page.

The concert will be free for anyone to attend, and there will be a bucket collection for our two local Liverpool charities. Please encourage your friends, family and work colleagues to come along and listen.

BANQUET

Additionally, many of the singers joining us for the concert will be staying for a remarkable themed banquet in the crypt below the cathedral afterwards, catered by the incredible team at Gravy & Custard. The banquet includes a 3-course meal, and a glass of wine or a soft drink. There will also be a bar available.

LEARNING MATERIALS

For both the flash mob, and the concert, we will provide downloadable sheet music, rehearsal tracks (with your part being sung by a professional session singer), and two weekend rehearsals. The rehearsals will enable us to not just put the music together, but also rehearse the flash mob elements – entering from different locations, reacting to the various components of the event etc.

REHEARSALS

The two rehearsals will take place in the Main Hall at Childwall Sports and Science Academy, Queens Drive, Liverpool L15 6XZ. The hall has plenty of room, tiered seating, and its own car park. The rehearsals will run from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday 12th May, and from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 23rd June.

You will be expected to have learnt the music (using the sheet music and rehearsal tracks provided) before the rehearsals. The rehearsals will be fast-paced, as we'll have a lot to cover in a short time. Please come prepared!

HOW TO APPLY

This event is now fully booked.

FAQ

Answers to some quick questions

DO I HAVE TO AUDITION?

No. We're looking for people who already sing in choirs, so they're used to singing in harmony etc, but it doesn't matter what level of proficiency you or your choir have. We're confident that you'll get up to speed, using the learning materials we provide, plus the rehearsals.

DO I HAVE TO BE ABLE TO READ MUSIC?

No - although it's not a problem if you do. We provide the sheet music anyway, but we also provide rehearsal tracks that you can use to learn the music from and practice to as well. The rehearsal tracks are of a high standard, using professional session singers.

DO I HAVE TO ATTEND BOTH REHEARSALS?

We'd strongly recommend coming to both rehearsals if you can make them, but it's OK to miss one if you have another commitment. You do need to come to at least one rehearsal.

DO I HAVE TO LEARN THE SONGS FROM MEMORY?

For the flash mob, yes, this needs to be from memory. If you're joining us for the concert in the cathedral, you can use sheet music for this (although you don't have to). If you are using sheet music, it will need to be in a black folder. We do encourage people to memorise as much of the music as possible, as we believe you will give a more engaging performance if you are making eye contact with the audience.

IS THERE A DRESS CODE?

For the flash mob, no - dress as you normally would for in day in the city centre. For the concert, you'd need to wear all black, with the option of a coloured accessory (which could be a colour associated with your choir). If you're doing both, there is the chance to get changed between the two events, although time will be short.

HOW MANY SINGERS ARE TAKING PART?

We will have 150 singers in the concert at the Cathedral. For the flash mob, we will have over 60 singers at the beginning, and over 120 by the end.
